An episode of The Avengers from 1965. Steed rescuing Emma Peel who is tied to the minature railwaytracks at Stapleford Park near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. Some time afterwards the grounds of the Grade 1 country house were given over to a lion reserve, in the center of which was a compound of baboons and rhesus monkeys. My mate Trevor and I spent two summers working in the middle of the lion reserve in a kind of holding pen between the lions and the monkeys opening and closing a set of gates that allowed cars to travel between the two. We shared a hut and a couple of sticks. The lions were mostly, but not always docile. One female lion in particular was adept at shredding car tyres and we were warned not to make eye contact with the monkeys else they would be on your back in no time. Certainly, the circus people who ran the park displayed some impressive scars. It was great fun.

This is being boosted in some quarters as the ‘new’ Beach. It’s not. It’s much better than that. Imagine, if you will, a cross between The Long Good Friday and Point Break. A physical novel closer to Tim Winton or Kem Nunn worth the price of admission for the diving scenes alone and a must for anyone who has ever dipped a toe in the water. Signed copies.
